Low turnout in Spanish referendum

“Despite all the hype by the Spanish government and illegal interference by the Commission, the turnout in the Spanish referendum was only 42%. The government had predicted a 60% turnout, instead nearly 60% did not vote. This means the majority of the peoples in Spain do not support the European Constitution, whatever the Constitutionalists say,” says John Boyd, TEAM Coordinator.

Despite all the hype by the Spanish government and illegal interference by the Commission, the turnout in the Spanish referendum was only 42%. The government had predicted a 60% turnout, instead nearly 60% did not vote. This means the majority of the peoples in Spain do not support the European Constitution, whatever the Constitutionalists say.

Prior to the Spanish referendum some Member States ratified the European Constitution by votes in their national parliament with little or no debate. This was done without any reference to their electorates or public debate. There was no attempt to inform the voters of the implications of turning the European Community into a Union. Neither parliaments nor electorates were told that further powers held by national parliaments and governments would be handed to unelected and unaccountable EU institutions.

This bodes ill for this clumsy and totally undemocratic attempt to foist an EU state Constitution on the peoples across Europe.

The unwritten plan is to use the “domino effect” in favour of the Yes! side. This to done by starting with countries where opposition to the Constitution is thought to be weakest and leaving the strongest No! campaigns for later.

Some Commissioners and others with vested interests are already talking of getting around a Member State rejecting the Constitution. This is a signal that the forces and support for democracy will prevail and the EU state Constitution will fall.
